killzone-3-multiplayer-free-to-play

Free-to-play has become a viable strategy for several games in the past year such as Team Fortress 2 and DC Universe Online, and now Sony and Guerilla Games will gift gamers the multiplayer portion of the year-old FPS in all of its glory up to level 10. Beginning next week, players will be able to download a standalone version of Killzone 3’s multiplayer, which will include all game modes and maps, including DLC from PSN. Sony announced the shift on The Playstation Blogcast Thursday, which will cap players once they [...]

Player’s Choice – A Laundry List for Next Gen Features

You wish this was real.

One of my favourite strategies for avoiding people I don’t want to talk to is to immerse myself in my phone. Most often it leads to me cursing my way through a round of Temple Run. Sometimes though, it leads to constructive thoughts – like this one. During one of my diversion tactics, I came across a tweet by Cheat Central asking gamers what we really want to see from the next generation of consoles. It was after I had typed and erased four separate answers that I realized I [...]

The Next Level – The Last Level

mass-effect-3-profile

Although 2011 was the year of the sequel as far as many franchises were concerned, there are some highly anticipated follow-ups due out this year. Headlined by Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite, expectations couldn’t be higher for two franchises so highly decorated in awards and praise. The question at hand is: will they be great because of what preceding games pioneered or will these titles find a new way to earn what the previous installments claimed? Mass Effect is adding multiplayer. Bioshock Infinite takes place in the sky. The [...]

far-cry-3-trailer-screenshots

Ubisoft is pumping out a lot of new Far Cry 3 media and the game is looking awesome! The Ubisoft Montreal developed first person shooter Far Cry 3 was announced last year at the E3 with a promising reveal trailer. Everybody was really excited and on the other hand also relieved because the Far Cry Series was going back home onto the tropical islands after the safari trip a few years ago in Far Cry 2. Only this island is not as tropical as it might seem at first glance. [...]

assasins-creed-3

Now that all the Assassin’s Creed Revelations violence has died down we are ready to look forward to the actual official sequel title to Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed III. And it seems like the investors in Ubisoft were asking the same questions as CEO Yves Guillemot officially confirmed Assassin’s Creed III with a scheduled release date of October 30th 2012 in a conference call with investors this afternoon. He said: “Assassin’s Creed 3 is the true next generation of both the Assassin’s Creed brand and interactive entertainment/storytelling in general.” [...]

Hackers likely gained access to full Steam transactions

steam-cracked

This past weekend Valve software confirmed that the unidentified crackers who compromised their systems and gained access to the Steam distribution database in last year’s hack may have obtained a full copy of a backup file of Steam customer transactions. In a post last Friday, Gabe Newell, Valve’s co-founder and managing director explains that the file transaction backup file contained lists of essentially all transactions from between 2004 and 2008 containing usernames, email addresses, encrypted credit card and billing addresses, and various other less sensitive profile data. Gabe Newell did [...]

Mind/Games: Steam Sales

steam-sales

Valve recently celebrated yet another record year in game sales, to the surprise of absolutely no one. 2011 was an excellent year for Valve, who was able to announce their seventh straight year of 100 percent or more increase in game sales. What has Valve done so right? Think about that. Steam’s game sales have at least doubled, every year, for the past seven years. In the context of a brick and mortar store, their required storage warehouse would have double in size every year. Good thing for Valve that [...]

skyrim-creation-kit-surprise

Pete Hines from Bethesda posted a nice tweet on twitter to let everyone know that the upcoming Creation Kit for The Elder Scrolls Skyrim is right on schedule, as well as teasing everybody with some sort of “special surprise” that they have in store which will be included in the Creation Kit. Since then a lot of rumors have been going around the gaming world ranging from a special horse armor ’till official nude patches (which I think is going to be highly unlikely). Here is the complete tweet from [...]

Metro 2033 – Last Light Delayed and Will Depart on Platform 2013

metro-2033-last-light-delayed

As the title states, the upcoming sequel on THQ’s shooter Metro 2033 is delayed until early next year. The reason for this delay is not yet clear although it seems like THQ is trying to polish up the game a lot more than they did with the first Metro 2033 which still had a lot of bugs in it. Core games boss at THQ, Danny Bilson said he believed the shooter had what it takes to “compete with Call of Duty’s”. The question is however will they be able to [...]

The Invisible Wall – An Author’s Response

Every three or four years, I’ll mark a special day in my calendar. It’s not the leap year or the Summer Olympics. Actually I should put those in there. But the day to which I was originally referring is the release date of a new Zelda. The Legend of Zelda is my “desert island” franchise (“if you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one game…”). Most of us have at least one. That series of games that plays so familiar yet innovative and manages to engross [...]
