Player’s Choice – A Laundry List for Next Gen Features

You wish this was real.

One of my favourite strategies for avoiding people I don’t want to talk to is to immerse myself in my phone. Most often it leads to me cursing my way through a round of Temple Run. Sometimes though, it leads to constructive thoughts – like this one. During one of my diversion tactics, I came across a tweet by Cheat Central asking gamers what we really want to see from the next generation of consoles. It was after I had typed and erased four separate answers that I realized I [...]

The Next Level – The Last Level

mass-effect-3-profile

Although 2011 was the year of the sequel as far as many franchises were concerned, there are some highly anticipated follow-ups due out this year. Headlined by Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite, expectations couldn’t be higher for two franchises so highly decorated in awards and praise. The question at hand is: will they be great because of what preceding games pioneered or will these titles find a new way to earn what the previous installments claimed? Mass Effect is adding multiplayer. Bioshock Infinite takes place in the sky. The [...]

The Invisible Wall – An Author’s Response

zelda-link-skyward-sword

Every three or four years, I’ll mark a special day in my calendar. It’s not the leap year or the Summer Olympics. Actually I should put those in there. But the day to which I was originally referring is the release date of a new Zelda. The Legend of Zelda is my “desert island” franchise (“if you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one game…”). Most of us have at least one. That series of games that plays so familiar yet innovative and manages to engross [...]

SSX – Patagonia Trailer Makes the Impossible Possible

ssx-patagonia-trailer

Next Stop in the SSX media bombardment is Patagonia! EA Sports is really trying to sell this game with showing off the unrealistic, full of action, deadly descents. Of course we all know that SSX is not the in the Simulation genre and put more emphasis on the actual gameplay and “fun” aspect of the game instead of the realism, but this time they seem to pull the long bow in terms of actually defying the rules of physics that exist in this world in order to provide for a [...]

darkness-2-launch-trailer

2K Games released the official “The Darkness 2 Launch Trailer” exactly thirteen days before the game is due to hit the shelfs in the US and three days later in Europe. The trailer does not show any actual gameplay footage, although on the other hand it does show the main character “Jackie Estacado” (the current wielder of the darkness) that you will be playing throughout the actual game. “Victor Valente”, a mysterious figure who knows about the darkness isn’t left out either, he is after Jackie because he wants the [...]

Beautiful Desert footage from Uncharted 3

unchartered-3-desert-gameplay

Developer Naughty Dog has leaked almost 5 minutes of new Uncharted 3 gameplay footage showing off the main character stumbling into a remote village in the desert in search for water and instead ending up falling upon some rather unfriendly individuals. The hand to hand combat (at least visually speaking) that ensues seems particularly promising! Needless to say, all in all the graphics and visuals on this one look superb across the board! As many will recall the previous installments in the Uncharted series covered environments from jungle to snow [...]

The 10 Biggest Games of Fall 2011

ten-biggest-games-of-fall-2011

If I had a nickel for every big game due out this fall, I’d have several. And then I’d probably exchange them for quarters, because quarters are easier to carry. And even though that handful of chump change is worth more than Peter Molyneux’s word, you’re still going to need to know who will reign supreme this fall on console and PC. There’s no better way to convey that information than a list consisting of ten entries unveiling the top games, commonly referred to as a Top 10 list.

As our readers may recall, last month we covered the leaked I Am Alive gameplay trailer however at the time were unable to confirm whether it was just a one off oddity or if it actually signified the game which was announced way back in 2008 would be revived and see the light of day. Apparently today we have the answer.

“Got-No-Green” Lantern? DC Universe Online Goes Free

green lantern

If the cries of gamers weren’t muffled by the walls of our basements, perhaps our protests wouldn’t fall on deaf ears: “We don’t even pay to use PSN, why should we pay to play your game?” To PS3 players, paying a monthly subscription for a game is still a stretch. It’s a big reason the concept didn’t fly with Sony’s MMORPG DC Universe Online. But put away your Bat-call of distress, it’s going free to play on both PS3 and PC this October.

TGS 2011: Street Fighter X Tekken Teaser Trailer

street fighter x tekken (2)

From Capcom and Namco, the latest Street Fighter X Tekken trailer features a mealy melee crossover of epic proportions (last fat joke, I promise). Straight from TGS, the Street Fighter universe welcomes re-imagined Tekken characters while staying faithful to the fighters’ traits and styles. This game represents the first of two crossover titles; now show us some gameplay footage of Bob X Rufus and we’ll avoid rioting like a fat man at the back of a buffet line (sorry). Street Fighter X Tekken is currently slated for a 2012 release [...]

Micro-softing Out: Blu Ray coming to Xbox 360?

Better not clash with my avatar...

Two gentlemen are about to engage in the timeless debate of which console reigns supreme. “The PS3 plays Blu rays and it doesn’t have horrible failure issues like the red ring of doom!” says the Sony fan boy. “Actually, the PS3 has a similar problem,” says the Microsoft fan boy. “It’s called the green ring of death – as long as there’s a green ring on your Xbox 360, your PS3 won’t boot up!”

Virtual Boy Who? Sony Announces 3D Headset

And they wonder why we get a rep for being anti-social...

The geniuses over at Sony must have known that when a game gets intense, there’s barely an inch between my face and the television screen. “How can we make more money off this?” they pondered. “What if we can bring the screen to the face? Then add in the biggest gimmick of the year, we tack on 3D.”
